The Hg Foundation and The Access Foundation partner with codebar in £104,000 programme to support underrepresented groups into tech jobs

London, United Kingdom, 16 January 2025 – The Hg Foundation is joining forces with the Access Foundation to support codebar, a charity that facilitates the growth of a diverse tech community by running free regular programming workshops for minority groups in tech.

According to the Tech Talent Charter, women comprise only 29% of the UK tech workforce, while those from ethnic minorities constitute just 25%. codebar provides education, training and networking opportunities for members of underrepresented groups in tech. They are a global organisation, with 19,292 students across 33 branches worldwide.

The Hg Foundation will build on the Access Foundation’s existing support for codebar, providing £52,000 in matched funding to grow codebar’s capacity. With new Community Manager and Volunteer Coordinator posts, codebar will double the number of new community members signing up from 2,500 to 5,000 per year, as well as starting eight new codebar branches in the UK. The posts will also improve delivery quality by increasing programme and volunteer retention, and raising community member satisfaction.

To date, 600 individuals have benefited from workshops supported by the Access Foundation, of which 33% have gone on to secure IT roles; codebar aims to maintain this employment rate while scaling its reach.

We’re thrilled to have received this grant. It’s a powerful endorsement of the importance of creating inclusive opportunities in tech. This support enables us to expand our free workshops, reach even more underrepresented individuals, and open new doors to learning and growth. We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to drive meaningful change alongside our incredible community and supporters.

Kimberley Cook, Director, codebar

We are delighted to be able to strengthen our support of this fantastic organisation with the generous and significant donation from The Hg Foundation. codebar’s track record for getting people from minority groups into jobs in the tech sector speaks for itself and we look forward to seeing the exciting results which this expansion of their offering will bring.

Piers McLeish, Trustee, The Access Foundation

We’re delighted to be deepening the support provided by the Access Foundation to codebar – an organisation providing wide-ranging support to underrepresented groups in tech. The Hg Foundation’s vision is that the tech workforce of the future harnesses the talents of all, regardless of background. This grant supports that vision, enabling codebar to deepen the quality and further the breadth of their programme – which has demonstrable success at supporting participants into tech roles.
