Equipping disadvantaged students to succeed at high level mathematics.

A Level Further Mathematics is a crucial stepping stone for students wanting to pursue many highly selective university courses, which are gateways to high-quality graduate jobs. But support for the subject is unevenly spread through the English school system, with shortages of suitably qualified teachers, especially in the poorest areas.

Further mA*ths Online Programme is a pioneering and scalable approach to boosting achievement in A level Further Maths for state school students aged 17/18, developed by Imperial College London.

The programme provides a package of support through Massive Open Online Learning Courses (MOOCs), as well as intensive support to disadvantaged students through masterclasses, e-mentoring and other outreach activities. The open access online platforms are expected to reach circa 2,000 young people of all backgrounds. The scheme will also provide professional support for dozens of Further Maths teachers, creating the potential for a wider multiplier effect, as teachers spread new resources and learning through the education system.

“I loved the programme! The masterclasses were especially my favourite and I’d like to give my thanks to the outreach team for making it possible. It really made me like maths even more and see it in a new light.”
